Sound Designer for an Independent Feature Film

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30XJhUVNIio

I worked as the sound designer for Anni, a Finnish indie feature film directed by Jussi Einola and produced by Joonas Einola. My responsibilities included on-site recording, Foley effects, and mixing. In addition to mixing the film’s soundtrack, I mixed and mastered the music and composed several original pieces using material from composer Simo Salo. Anni also incorporates samples from Freesound.org contributors, listed below.

Music Composition for a Short Film

The video presents a scene from the short feature Astronautti, directed by Topias Parkkonen. The audio player contains the full soundtrack, composed of five pieces. A continuous low-frequency tone links the first four, symbolizing the protagonist’s unresolved childhood trauma. In the final scene, where he finds emotional release through a girl he’s fallen in love with, the tone fades signifying his liberation.

Melodies and textures from various analog synthesizers were recorded directly into the sound editor, with minimal rehearsal or formal composition. The film played on-screen during recording, allowing the emotional tone of each scene to intuitively guide the music.

No MIDI sequencing was used, as there was no fixed tempo and all synthesizer audio was captured live. In post-production, the material was further processed and edited to better align with the film’s events. The result is an organic, expressive, and intuitively crafted score.

Music and Dialogue Mix and Edit for a Trailer

Volume automation was applied to even out the dialogue dynamics, ensuring clarity and distinction. While not aiming for realism, this approach prioritizes a focused delivery of the message.

The music mix was tailored to support the dialogue, with the soundfield centered and reverbs intentionally darkened to avoid frequency masking.

I also served as recordist on several shoots and cleaned the recorded dialogue tracks, removing noise and disturbances from the raw footage.

Music Composition for Promotional Film

Compared to previous film sound projects where the soundtrack was created for an edited and silent video, the music for this piece was composed first. The final version took shape once the editors completed their work, guided ultimately by the wishes of Trio Taika.

The track uses samples from the following Freesound contributors: Batchku, Kostasvomvolos, Nosfoe, Scarbelly25, and Vitriolix.

Overtone flutes played by Antti Kero and Janne Särkelä.
