Sounds of Saturn’s Rings – A Sonification of Space

The rings of Saturn resemble a spectrogram, which inspired this experimental sonification of space.

An authentic image of Saturn’s rings was used as a spectral source. A 1-pixel vertical slice of the image was extracted and separated into three color channels. The intensity values of each channel were mapped to the cutoff frequencies of resonant filters—effectively translating the visual data into sound.

Each color plane drives 256 simultaneous sound sources, spatially arranged across the stereo field to mirror their position in the image. Some variations use up to 1024 voices, creating rich, layered textures. Minor frequency offsets per color channel introduce a subtle chorus effect.

The result is an immersive soundscape—an audible interpretation of Saturn’s rings. Original lossless audio files are available on Freesound.

Interactive Sound Wave Builder Using Live Video Input

The interactive sound wave builder was showcased at the Helsinki Hacklab booth during WÄRK:fest, a DIY/hacker/culture festival. The setup featured a small table, a webcam, and a Max/MSP/Jitter system. Visitors manipulated sound waves by arranging colorful objects on the table.

The table was scanned in two dimensions in real time, with the captured data driving oscillator pitches, amplitudes, and waveforms. This interaction generated both evolving soundscapes and dynamic visual patterns simultaneously.

Workshop on Digital Sound Environments

The two-hour workshop, held as part of the Teatterilaiva theater festival, was aimed at theater staff. Through an informal discussion on the basic principles of sound design, the focus shifted to available technologies and digital sound processing. Participants created sounds and soundscapes using freely available software and sound libraries. The workshop sparked ideas for future productions.

Sound Design for an Exhibition on Flight

The Finnish Aviation Museum organized Myyttinen Lento (Mythical Flight), an exhibition exploring flight-related myths and legends designed to spark the imagination of children and adults alike. A highlight was a magic carpet visitors could ride.

I collaborated with Marko Ahokangas from the Theatre Academy of Finland’s Lighting and Sound Design department – he created the sounds, while I programmed the sound player. Using Plogue Bidule, we crafted a continuously evolving, never-repeating eight-channel soundscape that filled the exhibition space.

Spatial audio was managed via four independent eight-channel linear output selectors, modulated by sine wave oscillators, dividing sounds into fast and slow categories controlled by separate sub-programs.

A synthesized wind-like instrument formed a musical layer, dynamically tuning its pitch (via FFT) to frequencies extracted from other sounds – e.g., matching airplane sounds to produce harmonious tones.

Presented here is a two-channel sample of the final soundscape.
