Sound Index: Organize DAW project Samples

If you’ve been producing for a while, your sample library is probably a mess. Projects scatter the same sounds across folders, and it’s hard to remember which kicks, snares, or loops you’ve actually used and which ones are just wasting disk space.

Sound Index solves that problem. It’s a lightweight macOS tool that scans your Ableton Live set files (.als), Logic, Logicx project bundles, and builds a searchable database of every sample reference. Each audio file in Finder gets a comment showing how many projects it appears in and which ones. The original samples aren’t modified – just annotated with metadata you can use.

The result is a practical way to:

  • Audit your sample usage
Instantly see which sounds are indispensable and which are never touched.

  • Clean your library
Identify duplicates and unused files without breaking projects.

  • Search efficiently
Run queries on a real database instead of digging through folders by hand.

Sound Index is a transparent solution built around open formats (Finder comments + SQLite) so you’re not locked in. If you’re tired of losing track of where your sounds live or which projects depend on them, this is a simple but powerful fix.

Salamatar: Website That Generates Melodies From Live Lightning Data

https://www.salamatar.fi

The website displays real-time lightning strikes on a map using data from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. It also converts the properties of these strikes into melodies that can be played live.

Here is a musical piece created through an improvised session layered over the lightning strike soundtrack: R Dimensio – Salamatar

Website and Gallery for a Clothing-Focused Art Project

ensaemble website

I’ve had the privilege of working with Ensæmble on multiple projects. In 2015, I collaborated with them to create a data-driven dance piece, and more recently, I developed this showcase website to their exact specifications. The site features five triptychs, each with images that change at randomly selected intervals. Take a look!

ASLAP: 1000 year long GIF animation – the longest GIF in the world?

AS Long As Possible (ASLAP) is a 1000 year long animated GIF loop. It’s an art project by Juha van Ingen in collaboration with Janne Särkelä. It is the longest GIF in the world. After 1000 years it’ll start again from the beginning.

The starting point in making AS Long As Possible was to make a one extremely long animated GIF loop. ASLAP is made of black frames with a white number indicating the frames position in the loop. There are 48 140 288 frames which change in c.a. 10 minute intervals making the total duration of the loop 1000 years.

The GIF animation specification itself doesn’t limit its length.

The name of ASLAP is hommage to John Cage composition “ORGAN2/ASLSP” (1987) which is played with Halberstad organs for the next 625 years. The abbreviation of Cages composition included and instruction to the performer of the piece: As SLow aS Possible.
