Music Composition for a Short Film

An intuitive, live-recorded analog synthesizer score for the short film, blending organically with the story’s emotional arc and edited to match on-screen events.

The video presents a scene from the short feature Astronautti, directed by Topias Parkkonen. The audio player contains the full soundtrack, composed of five pieces. A continuous low-frequency tone links the first four, symbolizing the protagonist’s unresolved childhood trauma. In the final scene, where he finds emotional release through a girl he’s fallen in love with, the tone fades signifying his liberation.

Melodies and textures from various analog synthesizers were recorded directly into the sound editor, with minimal rehearsal or formal composition. The film played on-screen during recording, allowing the emotional tone of each scene to intuitively guide the music.

No MIDI sequencing was used, as there was no fixed tempo and all synthesizer audio was captured live. In post-production, the material was further processed and edited to better align with the film’s events. The result is an organic, expressive, and intuitively crafted score.
